John Vaillant is a freelance magazine writer whose work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, National Geographic, Outside, and The Walrus. He is the author of two award-winning bestsellers, The Golden Spruce (2005), and The Tiger (2010). His work in this and other fields has taken him to five continents and five oceans. He lives in Vancouver.
